Anne Smith

Anne spent her working life in secondary and tertiary education, in single sex and mixed schools, private and state schools, grammar and comprehensive, in 11-18 schools and a 14-18, in a sixth form college under schools’ regulations and a sixth form College under FE regulations.  There was also a short spell of teaching English to adults.  She was second mistress and deputy head in a school, and then Vice-Principal and Principal in a College. Her training included a number of courses run by the Institute of Education, concentrating on multi-cultural education and special education, and she completed an MA while serving at the College. 

Since retirement, Anne has been a governor and Vice Chair of John Ruskin College, is Chair of the Croydon Drop-In agency, and was the Independent Chair of the Croydon Council Standards Committee for the ten years of its existence. She is now the Independent Person whom the Council must consult on matters of councillor ethics, and as such sits on the Ethics Committee; in addition, she has conducted an enquiry on behalf of the Council and is currently on a council panel which is examining various council matters. 

Anne is particularly interested in safeguarding and was the safeguarding governor on the John Ruskin board of governors. She is happy to pursue a career-long interest in John Ruskin by joining the board of Orbital South Colleges.
