Student successes at AHT competition

Date: 01 March 2018

East Surrey College Theatrical Make-Up, Hair and Media Make-Up students fought it out in the semi-finals of the National Association of Hairdressers and Therapists Awards (AHT) Southern heats.

The competition saw over 135 competitors from Colleges across the South East competing to demonstrate their creative skills in a range of categories including 1920s Make-Up, Body Art and Masquerade Face Painting.

Congratulations to five of our students who impressed the judges with stunning displays and triumphed on the day:

 1st place – Isabella Oakley - Category: 1920s Make-Up

2nd place – Sabrina Batchelor - Category: 1920s Make-Up

1st place – Megan Monks - Category: Body Art

2nd place – Kirsten Massingham - Category: Masquerade

3rd place – Gracie Newman - Category: Masquerade

All five students have now qualified to represent the South East at the AHT Final, which will be held in Blackpool in March 2018.

Karen Fundell, Theatrical Make-Up Course Leader at ESC commented:

“This year saw a real collaboration between both the HND and Level 2/3 students supporting one another and working as a team. HND students were able to advise Level 3 students and support them with their final designs, as they had already competed and knew the structure and competition requirements.”

The Head of Hair and Beauty, David Rabjohns said:

“It was great for students to showcase their talents and experience the highly charged competitive atmosphere of a national competition. Students from many of the colleges in the South East region came together to demonstrate their creativity and skills. With 5 of our students making it through to the national finals we are in a great position. Our students will have an amazing experience at the finals held at the prestigious Winter Gardens, Blackpool.”
