East Surrey College hosts County Lines Awareness Event

East Surrey College hosts County Lines Awareness Event

Date: 10 March 2023

As part of the ongoing work to tackle the threat of drug trafficking and knife crime in the county, officers from Surrey Police Safer Neighbourhood and representatives from Crimestoppers Surrey joined the staff at East Surrey College to raise awareness as part of County Lines Intensification week.

On Wednesday 1 March, students were welcomed by a signed van outside the College with key messaging about county lines. This provided students with information about the fearless youth service, which develops effective anti-crime resources for young people and their families.

Throughout the day, students could attend workshops and speak with representatives in our Winter Garden to find out how they can help support the local community by reporting any drug-related crime. Students were also able to meet Hector, the trainee puppy, giving students an insight into the role dogs play in the force.

PC Richard Mcewen, from Reigate and Banstead’s Safer Neighbourhood Team, said: “Working closely with local schools and colleges is an important part of our commitment to safeguard communities from the devastating effects of county lines.

“We were able to speak openly with the students at East Surrey College about some of the risks involved with drugs, including exploitation and other associated dangers, such as knife crime."

“By having these conversations, we can work together as a community to spot the signs of county lines activity and protect those most at risk of exploitation.”

Lindsay Pamphilon, Chief Executive and Principal of Orbital South Colleges, added: “East Surrey College was delighted with the opportunity for students to hear more from the police about County Lines, talk to officers, and gain a first-hand understanding of the importance of keeping our community safe.”
