Colleges Week – ‘Becoming a green energy Superpower’

Date: 10 March 2025

On Tuesday 4 March, the College’s Week theme for the day was ‘Becoming a Green Energy Superpower’. The day served as a reminder of OSC’s commitment to a greener future and how we have helped to deliver this on a national scale with our green skills electric & hybrid vehicle training.

In April 2023, our commitment to a greener future was secured when the Colleges were awarded a share of £2.6m in strategic development funding from the Department for Education. The funding helped to purchase four Ultra-Low Emission Vehicles for the College’s Motor Vehicle teams - one full electric, a mild hybrid, full- hybrid and Plug in Hybrid. Since their introduction, hundreds of students have been able to work with electric vehicles, equipping them for a future of clean transportation.

As the government plans to phase out the sale of new petrol and diesel cars by 2035, the demand for qualified electric vehicle technicians will undoubtably rise. By providing facilities for motor vehicle students to train and work with Ultra Low Emission Vehicles, we’re helping to prepare the workforce for this change. Motor Vehicle students who work on these cars will learn about their unique electric vehicle battery and generator Systems and how to safely work with their high voltage systems.

By providing this kind of training we’re helping to equip the workforce for a changing landscape and are able to contribute to the government net-zero 2050 target.
