We are delighted that two of our students from the Reigate School of Art have been selected to exhibit their work at Origins Creatives 2022. The show took place at the Truman Brewery in Shoreditch, London between Friday 24 and Sunday 26 July.
The work of Luca Lauga-Brown, 17, and Maeve Lewis, 18, caught the attention of UAL Awarding Body’s curator amongst nearly 500 submissions from FE students nationwide.
Luca, who completed an Extended Diploma in Film, TV and Media Production this year, submitted a short film entitled Repetition. The film explores the things we repeat every day in our routines, and represents the mechanical aspects of modern life, in particular the way we are dominated by machines.
Luca explains: “My idea was that everyone does certain things every day, for example waking up to an alarm or eating breakfast. I wanted to show how we repeat things using visual effects, sounds and camera angles.” His work can be viewed here: https://youtu.be/KoYQvK8-yBY
Fay Hoolahan, Luca's tutor, said: “I am delighted that Luca’s film has been selected for the UAL Origins Exhibition this year. Luca is a hardworking and very dedicated student, who has achieved extremely well in his Diploma. He has explored various aspects of film and media practice during the course, in particular investigating in 3D computer graphics to create animations, visual effects and three-dimensional environments. In his Final Major Project, he further developed and expanded his skills to create an inventive and polished narrative. Well done, Luca!”
Maeve, who recently completed her two-year Extended Diploma in Creative Practice, Art Design and Communication, created an evocative animation based on Amnesia: https://mlewishk2017.wixsite.com/maeve-lewis-2
Describing her work, Maeve said: “The idea and concept of Amnesia is an interesting one for me as our identity is partly made from our memories, so who would we be if we lost them? Can we consider this a kind of death? I wanted to see how I could depict this in a visual way, what the memories of someone with amnesia may look like.”
Maeve’s tutor, Zoe Lodge, commented: “I’m incredibly pleased Maeve’s work was chosen to be show-cased at this year’s UAL Origins show. Maeve has worked consistently hard throughout her two-year Diploma and has continued to take risks, push boundaries and explore a variety of disciplines within her practice throughout recent projects. Maeve’s commitment, dedication and imagination are all highlighted throughout this Final Major Project submission and she truly deserves to feel pride in all she has achieved.”
Origins Creatives is organised by UAL Awarding Body and provides art lovers, critics and industry professionals from the creative sector the chance to discover original creative talent from across the UK and celebrate students’ creativity and hard work.
The free exhibition showcases work from some of the UK’s most talented students in FE institutions studying across the UAL subject areas of Art and Design, Fashion Business and Retail, Creative Media, Music Performance and Production and Performing Arts.
The exhibition will showcase selected work created by students from Levels 1, 2, 3 and 4 across all subject areas. You can expect to see a diverse range of painting, photography, drawing, sculpture, fashion and more. Within the exhibition, a Soundcloud music playlist and showreel of moving images comprised of student work will be played.
Ross Anderson, Director, UAL Awarding Body said:
“The UAL Awarding Body Origins Creatives show is my favourite moment of the year, and I’m so pleased that we’re able to return to a physical space this summer. Origins provides our awarding body community with the opportunity to come together and celebrate the wonderful work and amazing achievements of all our students and recognise the remarkable efforts of the tutors and teachers who have supported them. The world needs creativity, now more than ever, and our students are bursting with it!”
