Student Success at the SATRO Awards!

Student Success at the SATRO Awards!

Date: 28 September 2018

We are proud to celebrate the achievements of one of our Apprentices, Elliott Moreton who was awarded ‘Outstanding STEM Apprentice’ at the SATRO Awards on Wednesday!

The charity aims to inspire young people in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths, and the SATRO Awards publicise the commitment to industry amongst these young people and their education providers.

The nomination came from Elliott’s employer, Gatwick Airport Limited, and East Surrey College. Elliott’s involvement with STEM fairs, such as Big Bang Events, was recognised, as referenced by Richard Brooks, Business Development Manager at East Surrey College:

“Elliott is a true ambassador for Apprenticeships and a keen promoter of STEM subjects. He volunteered regularly at STEM events – inspiring others and raising awareness of Apprenticeships. I strongly believe he is a role model for other young people.”

Tony Yates, Head of Engineering at Gatwick Airport said:

“Elliott really excelled during his time as a Gatwick apprentice, with his impressive STEM skillset being so valuable to the airport that we were really keen for him to join the Gatwick family full-time. We’re dedicated to nurturing the most exciting engineering talent for the future of Gatwick, and it’s hugely rewarding for us to see our hard-working apprentices getting the external recognition they truly deserve.”

Whilst completing his Engineering Maintenance Apprenticeship, Elliott studied for an HNC in Electrical and Electronic Engineering at the College. Throughout his Apprenticeship rotation, he had the chance to work in different areas and progressed to employment as a Baggage Technician at the airport, after excelling in that department.

He described how the skills he learnt were vital in the workplace, commenting that:

“The College lecturers have come from industry, so you receive skills and experience from the people who know it best. Being able to complete College projects whilst relating them to work and being able to make a change was really rewarding.”

An Apprenticeship is a rewarding pathway in your chosen industry, which allows you to earn whilst you learn. Find out more, and explore our vacancies here: https://www.esc.ac.uk/apprenticeships-2.
