Team ESC: Hat-trick at the Student Motorsport Challenge (Event 4)

Team ESC: Hat-trick at the Student Motorsport Challenge (Event 4)

Date: 02 August 2022

It’s a hat-trick for the Motorsport team at East Surrey College as they win for the third time in the Student Motorsport Challenge, putting us back in the lead! If you’ve not been following the story about our successes, here is your opportunity to catch up on Event 1 and Event 2.

Our Motorsports team had some ground to make up as they were unable to take part in Event 3 at the Anglesey International Circuit in June, which resulted in the team being knocked down into second place within the challenge. Event 4 took place at Snetterton Motor Racing Circuit on 23-24 July and after completing rounds 8 and 9, our team was reunited with first place.

At the end of the qualifying races, our professional driver Andy Burgess was placed seventh on the grid for Race 1 and sixth going into Race 2. After a challenging two races, Andy achieved sixth place in Race 1 and fifth place in Race 2. Achieving sixth and fifth place in the overall Nan Kang Citycar Cup gave our Motorsports team two first-place podiums in the Student Motorsport Challenge section of the event. Following an accident on the track, the third race of the day was postponed and will now take place at Event 5, Cadwell Park 20-21 August.

Motorsports tutor George Keith commented: “After another successful weekend at the races, I must thank Andy Burgess for his exceptional driving and bringing home two more wins for the College Team. Being part of the Student Motorsport Challenge has allowed students to learn about the logistics of producing a race car and developing quick thinking on car diagnostics, resulting in efficient improvements and repairs. Although we sustained some damage to our front right wing and bumper during the event, students and staff will work hard to prepare for Cadwell Park in August.”

Richard Drayson, a Technician in the Motor Vehicle Department added: “It was an exciting two-day event, where students were able to take centre stage in organising the motorsports crew with support from staff. A big thank you to everyone who made the event possible!”
