Applied Science Level 3

Applied Science Level 3 - Jhalak

Former School(s): St Wilfrid's Catholic School

When Jhalak came to an Open Event at East Surrey College to get more information about the Science courses, she knew this would be the best place to continue her studies. She was excited about the progression routes the College could offer her, and was looking forward to studying all three aspects of Chemistry, Biology and Physics.

Regarding her time at the College, she said:

“The teaching support has been amazing and they are always encouraging all students to work hard and achieve their goals. This is reflected in my grades, as I have received distinctions across the board so far”.

Jhalak has also loved meeting new people at College from all different walks of life. She is currently also the student representative for her class so she can share the viewpoints of her peers to the College.

Alongside studying, Jhalak also set up her own work experience with Kamsons Pharmacy under the guidance of her teachers. On the experience she said:

“I was doing the work of a healthcare assistant – dispensing medication, labelling prescriptions, checking quantities and strength and also got experience in customer service. The experience has really shown me what it’s like to work in the real world”.

Regarding the future, she would love to continue her studies at university in the field of science and would like to incorporate this with psychology and studies of mental health.

For the 2021/22 academic year, Jhalak was elected as the Student Union President, a role in which she is excited to help "encourage other students and let them know what they say does actually make a difference."

In her role, Jhalak has had the opportunity to launch charitable initiatives such as a foodbank and a present donation. She is also hoping to run one big charity event each term.

“I really want to make the Student Reps more of a community. I want us to be closer together, as I don’t really know many students across other course areas.”
