When you leave school or college there are certain skills that you cannot afford to be without. Functional Skills and GCSE Maths and English are essential qualifications and form part of our full-time programmes at East Surrey College. This is a chance to further develop your skills in these areas.
Whatever your future holds it is vital that you know how to communicate effectively and how to work with numbers. These skills are an integral part of everyday life, and when applying for a job or college course you will often be asked to provide evidence that you have mastered them. Therefore they are vital to your future success in progressing to other courses and in gaining employment.
You will be assessed at interview to ensure your core Maths and English skills are at the correct level for the course you are applying for. If not, you will be advised on the GCSE or pre-GCSE courses available to you.
From 2017, GCSE exams in English language, English literature and Maths will be graded from 9 to 1 instead of A*to G as part of a new grading structure.
If you did not achieve an A*- C (9-4) grade in English Language or Maths then you will have the opportunity to retake them. GCSEs are an essential qualification to progress onto most Further and Higher Education courses; and are widely recognised and valued by employers.
If you have not been in education for some time, or your English and Maths skills need improvement, we offer Pre-GCSE classes in both English and Maths.
