Tilly has always loved animals and knew our Animal Management course would be perfect for her. She enjoys working collaboratively in the classroom with her fellow students, taking care of the animals, and seeing their personalities shine.
Why did you decide to study this course?
Ever since I was a child, I’ve loved animals and have always wanted to gain more experience working with them so I can one day pursue a career in animal care. I originally studied Travel and Tourism but felt it wasn’t the right fit for me, so I’m very happy that I’ve now found a place in Animal Management. The facilities, animals, and teaching are great, and we all work well together as a group.
What do you enjoy most about your course?
My favourite thing about the course is getting to know all of the animals and also the other students. As part of our course includes a lot of teamwork to help care for the animals, we often work in groups. Something else I enjoy is the course content – the stuff we learn is really interesting, especially learning about the different types of handling and restraint.
What do you like most about being a student at East Surrey College?
Something I like most is how supportive the teachers are. I had a hard year last year but now my teacher really cares about us and wants us to succeed. Working alongside the animals in our classroom is also a major benefit, I love seeing all their personalities come out over time.
Do you participate in any Work Experience as part of your course?
Yes, as part of our course we need to complete 60 hours of work experience. I’ve been working with Pets on the Green in Warlingham which includes handling animals once a week. I’ve been really enjoying it so far.
What are your plans for when you leave college?
I want to hopefully continue my studies in Animal Management, and then after College my goal is to go straight into a job as I would love to be a zookeeper or open my own non-profit animal rescue and charity. It would be so cool have a job that helps in the rehabilitation of animals in need.
Would you recommend ESC to future students?
I would definitely recommend ESC! Many of the teachers are there to help you whenever you need help, especially if you’re struggling with something. The facilities in the College are really good, and our Animal Management department is always growing – we are getting rabbits to the college soon.
