Growing up, Iona has always lived in a creative environment. After being impressed by the facilities in our art department during a taster day, she decided to study something she has always loved. She enjoys getting a chance to develop in her skills, and has even taken part in some of our Part-time courses.
What led you to choosing this course?
I have a strong interest in pursuing a career in art. I grew up in a creative environment with my mum working in embroidery, and I was shown various art forms from an early age. Her creativity has been a big influence on me. I also had the opportunity to study art during high school, which is when I found my passion for it.Â
Why did you decide to study at ESC? Â
I was impressed with the size of the art department and how they had more resources to support my development, which stood out compared to other colleges I visited. Attending a taster day and participating in night classes, including jewellery and printmaking with Monica, gave me a clearer understanding of what ESC had to offer. These experiences made it clear that ESC is the right place for me to grow and achieve my goals.Â
What did you enjoy most about your course? Â
I enjoy experiencing a different level of freedom than what I am used to. Although there is still a process involved, I get to decide where I want to take it. I also love having the opportunity to try many new things.Â
Overall, how did you find the teaching/support?Â
They are all amazing. The tutors are very supportive and I feel that they also share their knowledge with me in a way that I understand.Â
Â
Did you complete any work experience during this course? How did you find it and what takeaways did you have from it?Â
I work for my mum, who runs her own business, primarily handling the packing side of things, and I’ve also done some design work for an embroidery company. I really enjoy it.Â
Did you take part in any events/trips/competitions/exhibitions or had any speakers visit? If so, what and tell us more!Â
I visited Tate Modern, the V&A, and the Design Museum, and I found each of them interesting. The V&A, in particular, stands out with its impressive collection, which displays a wide variety of exhibits to learn about, there was a lot to appreciate. Each museum provided a different perspective on art and design.Â
What are your plans once you’ve finished your course? Â
I had been considering apprenticeships to become a tattoo artist, but I’ve now decided to look into a career in fashion textiles. In the future, I’m thinking about attending university to further my knowledge and study the industry in more depth.Â
Â
Would you recommend ESC to a future student? If so, why?Â
For artists, I highly recommend RSA within ESC, as they have an excellent art department that’s both engaging and enjoyable. It has been a big part in helping me figure out my future path, and I’m confident it will be just as helpful for others on their journey.Â
