Ben followed his family’s legacy and chose Carpentry in hopes of one day having his own business. He liked the idea of College more than Sixth Form because of how you can focus on a single subject. At East Surrey College, there’s more freedom to pursue the career you want.
What led to you choosing this course?
For three generations my family has been involved in the trade industry and Carpentry. It started with my Grandad then it was my Dad and Uncle, and now my brother and I, so I grew up around it. Seeing the skills and work involved growing up made me interested in the career path and I decided to apply for the Carpentry Level 2 course.Â
Why did you choose to study at ESC?
I chose East Surrey College because the workshop facilities are amazing. I knew I would prefer College over Six Form because of how laid-back and course-specific the work is, you feel more like an adult and there’s more freedom.
What do you enjoy most about your course?
For me, it’s definitely how much of our time is spent doing practical learning in the workshop. Everything relates directly back to what we are here to study, and we can use these skills for our future.
How are you finding the teaching and support?
The tutors are great and always on hand to help you and listen to what you have to say. They let us focus on our work and make sure we complete everything whilst still being laid back. The tutors are always on hand to help if you need it.
Have you completed any work experience during this course?
Yes, I worked in the trade industry for a family friend and gained some valuable experience. I also have worked for my brother who does Carpentry, so it was interesting to use my workshop skills in a real-life setting.
I aim to start working in the trade and hopefully one day start a business related to this.
Would you recommend ESC to a future student. If so, why?
Yes, I would recommend East Surrey College because it’s a great place to study trade skills. There’s a lot of freedom and a laid-back atmosphere.
