Why did you choose East Surrey College, and why did you choose the course(s) you took?
Based on my grades, East Surrey was one of the colleges that accepted me. I also preferred not to attend any colleges in or near Croydon.
What did you enjoy about the course/s?
I really enjoyed the supportive and structured teaching. My tutor Marie was especially impactful—her discipline helped keep me focused, and her no-nonsense approach, balanced with moments of fun, made the learning experience both enjoyable and effective.
How did you find the teaching/support on the course/s and were there any supportive teachers?
The support was OUTSTANDING! As someone with dyslexia, I appreciated that my tutor Marie never gave me sympathy—she pushed me to do my best and always spoke honestly. If I could improve, she told me; if I did well, she acknowledged it. Her support and high standards helped me accomplish more than I thought possible. I often think of Marie and hope she’s proud of me—she played a big part in shaping my career. Every college needs a Marie.
Did you undertake any work experience whilst on the course?
Yes, I did, and it was incredibly valuable for my career. Some of the placements even led to job offers, giving me a head start in the sector before I had my qualifications. The experience helped me understand the day-to-day routines of childcare settings, how children grow and thrive, and the crucial role of strong parent–carer relationships in supporting a child’s development.
How did the course prepare you for your job or university? What specific skills did you learn that have been helpful in your work or studies?
The course taught me the importance of routine, punctuality, and consistent attendance. Being present in class ensured I didn’t miss important information, which has been essential in both my professional and academic life.
What are your future plans or your current career path?
My future plans are to expand the business and reach more parents and children within the community. I aim to create a setting that not only helps children thrive but also supports families, parents, and carers in the vital role they play in a child’s upbringing.
Do you have any advice you would give to current students at East Surrey College?
Enjoy every moment, make friends and embrace the journey that college offers. Be intentional with your learning and set yourself small, achievable goals. Don’t compare your path to others; focus on your own progress. It’s okay to feel unsure or to change your mind along the way. This is your life, live it with no regrets!
