Driven by a passion for motorsport from an early age, Oliver found the perfect environment at East Surrey College to transform his enthusiasm into a clear career path. With hands-on workshop experience, supportive tutors, and a focused learning atmosphere, the College has helped him build the confidence and skills he needs for his future in the motorsport industry.
Why did you decide to study this course?
I’ve always been interested in motorsports, and I’ve been into cars since I was really young, so I wanted to find something that would properly fit a future career in the motorsport industry. I also did some fieldwork experience in Year 10 with NHA Motorsport, working around MX-5 race cars. It was incredibly enjoyable and gave me a lot of practical knowledge, which really prepared me for starting the course. My stepdad also races, and I used to join him and help out with the prep, so being around that environment made me even more certain that this was the right direction for me.
What do you like most about being a student at East Surrey College?
I think the inclusivity is one of the best things – everyone is made to feel involved from the start. I didn’t enjoy school previously because there were so many people with totally different goals, and it didn’t feel focused. Here, everyone knows what they want to do, and you can see people genuinely working towards their ambitions. It feels grown-up and intentional. I also love that we get to work hands-on with cars rather than mainly doing written work, this environment and learning style suits me much better.
How have you found the teaching and support given at ESC?
The support has been very good. Last year I was actually on track to failing the course, and one of my tutors helped me realise the importance of persevering and sticking with it. They encouraged me to push through the difficult parts so I could get what I truly needed out of my studies here. That guidance made a big difference to how I approach my work now.
What are your plans for when you leave college?
When I leave college, I would like to get an apprenticeship in mechanics, ideally something that connects to motorsport. I’m interested in eventually working with race teams or championships, that would be really good fun.
Would you recommend ESC to future students?
100%. I honestly think you wouldn’t regret choosing East Surrey College. You’ll leave with a solid qualification and strong practical skills that will give you real confidence when you enter the workplace. The environment, the support, and the hands-on learning all help you grow and prepare for your future, especially for a course like Motorsports – it’s vital.
