Aspiring firefighter Aaron knew the importance of choosing a college with a strong Public Services faculty. After attending open events at several local colleges, he quickly realised that East Surrey College was the right choice for him.
Why did you decide to study this course?
I want to become a firefighter, and I actually looked at other colleges but East Surrey College stood out to me as having the best Public Services department. I liked how much the College invests in Public Services, how they run the parades for VE day and Remembrance Day and expeditions.
What do you enjoy most about your course?
The teamwork – definitely. We did a 2-day expedition where we walked for several miles, set up tents and a campfire, all as a team. You really get to know everyone more than you would on any other course as you’re powering through on these expeditions – it’s really cool.
What do you like most about being a student at ESC?
I think the facilities here are what really stand out to me. The campus is very big so there’s lots of places to go outside of class – with the LRC, Common Room, Gym and the Sports Hall – it really adds to the college experience.
How have you found the teaching and support given at ESC?
Oh Great – I love the teachers at college. When we do assignments they are really good an assessing work and providing constructive feedback. They don’t talk down to us, they treat us like equals, even down to calling them by their first name. It doesn’t feel patronising.
What are your plans for when you leave college?
As soon as I leave College I’m planning on becoming a firefighter. On the course next year they will be showing us progression routes including routes into Firefighting, so I’m excited to see what’s involved.
Would you recommend ESC to future students?
I would definitely recommend East Surrey to future students, because it’s so different from school. I have three full days at college with two days off a week which is perfect. I can balance my time outside of college, choosing when I want to do assignments.
