What led you to choose this course?
I heard about the course by chance but immediately knew that Public Services Level 3 was the course for me. My goal is to get into law enforcement for a career as I really like the idea of going on expeditions, improving my fitness level and serving the country. The Public Services course will give me all the beneficial skills needed for law enforcement.
Why did you decide to study at ESC?
My first impression was at one of the College’s Open Events, where I had an amazing first impression. Everyone was so welcoming, and I got to meet with lots of staff, which made me feel comfortable and reassured. So, when I heard about the Public Services course, I was ready to apply. The interview process went really well, too, I felt supported the entire time.
What did you enjoy most about your course?
The thing I enjoy most is that the course gives realistic career experience in practical situations. We go on many expeditions to places such as local viewpoints and National Trust grounds. These expeditions are great because we get to practice relevant skills like map reading, first aid and how to build shelters.
Our tutors make sure our day-to-day lessons are really enjoyable, and even then, we are also learning practical skills. I found a class on coping mechanisms for people in high-stress jobs interesting, and it directly prepares us for the future workforce.
Overall, how did you find the teaching/support?
Tutors are always there for you if you need help with something; they’re easy to contact online. I have found the teaching support to be really good, they always want to help and support their students. They are especially good at helping us prepare for exams.
Did you complete any work experience during this course? How did you find it and what takeaways did you have from it?
I have work experience booked to complete with a charity called Got some booked at charity HCPT, which every Easter helps over 1,000 disabled and disadvantaged children enjoy a weeklong holiday in Lourdes, staying in hotels with their volunteer helpers.
Did you take part in any events/trips/competitions/exhibitions, or did any speakers visit? If so, what and tell us more!
So far we’ve had lots of speakers come in to present to the Public Services students. We’ve had Merstham prison services, gym trainers, and even a trip to an army base to have a tour and participate in some activities. We also go on our expedition trips most weeks as part of our course.
What are your future plans once you’ve finished your course?
I plan to finish my first year of the course and progress to year 2. Overall, I’m looking for a career outside of university and am looking to join the Ministry of Defence police.
Would you recommend ESC to a future student? If so, why?
Absolutely, I’ve had a great experience here and love it here. I settled in immediately and feel really welcome from both staff and students. The facilities at ESC are great too, especially the sports hall and the gym.
