Rhys’ first experience in a teaching environment was at college, having spent his entire life homeschooled. Whilst studying his Digital IT Apprenticeship and getting used to college life, he has also been working on his GCSEs and functional skills. He won the ‘Overcoming Adversity’ Apprenticeship award in the most recent National Apprenticeship Week, and has been flourishing since starting at East Surrey College.
Why did you choose an Apprenticeship?
I chose an Apprenticeship because I wanted to gain real, hands-on experience rather than just learning theory in a classroom. The idea of earning an income whilst learning appealed to me, as it meant I could build practical skills, gain industry experience, and start my career at the same time. The biggest benefit has been being exposed to real-world IT environments and problems, which has helped me grow much faster than I would have through purely academic study.
How did you find your Apprenticeship?
I found my Apprenticeship by actively searching online and looking through Apprenticeship job boards. The application process involved submitting my CV, attending interviews, and demonstrating both my technical interest and willingness to learn.
When did you start with your company? How long is the apprenticeship with them?
I started with my company in September 2024. The Apprenticeship typically lasts around 18 months from start to finish, although this can be shorter or extended depending on individual progress. The length of the course has meant I have enough time to build practical experience at work while also completing the required coursework as part of my Level 3 programme.
What did your apprenticeship involve?
My Apprenticeship involves working in a real IT environment, supporting users, troubleshooting hardware and software issues, and assisting with projects across the business.
I’ve gained hands-on experience while developing my technical knowledge and problem-solving skills. No two days are the same, which keeps the work engaging and constantly challenging. Alongside the work-based learning, I also complete college coursework, assignments, and regular reviews to track my progress.
What did you enjoy most about your apprenticeship?
My favourite thing is that I get to solve problems, as well as being able to set things up and see how it all comes together – its incredibly satisfying!
I have also realised how important soft skills are. Being able to explain things clearly, help others and manage expectations makes a massive difference. It is that mix of technical problem-solving and working with people that makes the work engaging and keeps me motivated.
How does the experience you are getting at work help you with your coursework/studies at College?
The experience I’m getting at work helps me connect what I learn in class to real-world situations. Troubleshooting, setting up systems, and working with others makes the theory more practical and helps me develop both technical and communication skills.
What do you think of the course at ESC?
I think the course at ESC is really good. The tutors are supportive and approachable, the equipment is up to date, and the course itself is calm and not intimidating, which makes it easy to learn and get hands on experience.
What advice would you give to students considering an Apprenticeship?
I’d say just go for it – what’s the harm? An Apprenticeship in any field is a fantastic way to learn while gaining real, hands-on experience. It can be challenging at times, but the skills and confidence you build are priceless.
What are your future plans? University? Career aspiration?
I plan to move onto a more technically focused course to build my skills further and deepen my expertise. I’m aiming to keep developing in IT rather than going to university, so I can focus on gaining practical experience and advancing my career.
