Jonas began his journey at East Surrey College in 2023. After leaving school, he wanted to have a more hands-on education that would also provide a lasting career, leading him to Painting & Decorating Level 2. After completing his studies, Jonas saw Art & Design as a natural progression that allowed him to develop his creative and practical skills further.
Why did you decide to study Art & Design Level 1?
This course felt like a natural progression for me. I knew I liked studying at the College, and wanted to see where the Art & Design course could take me. When I was in secondary school, I was always really good at art, which is what first encouraged me to choose Painting & Decorating. I knew the Art & Design course would be a good choice for continuing my studies, as I already had the skill and wanted to build on expressing my creativity.
East Surrey College is also really well connected, which has really made it easier to balance college with my social life.
What do you enjoy most about your course?
I’ve really enjoyed getting to know everyone during my time at the College. The Art & Design course has a relaxed and supportive environment, and there’s always music playing, which really helps me express myself creatively in my work.
I enjoy how social the course is, working together on projects and getting to know others on the course. The atmosphere is really relaxed and I feel this supports my creativity whether I’m painting or drawing. The teachers are supportive and the facilities are also really good.
What do you like most about being a student at ESC?
I think that the college feels like a safe and supportive place and staff always available to help if you need it. The learning structure is different from school, and you get to do things you wouldn’t normally be able to do in a typical classroom setting. Studying something vocational makes it more enjoyable and relevant, especially with the career that I want to pursue.
I also like being able to use the ALS room downstairs it’s a great place to chill or get homework done, and the staff there are always supportive if I need help.
How have you found the teaching and support given at ESC?
The teaching and support at East Surrey College have been really helpful. Both my tutors for Painting & Decorating and Art & Design have been really supportive throughout my time here. Especially now, I feel my tutor is always there to help me express my ideas more clearly and constructively.
What are your plans for when you leave college?
When I leave college, I plan to start my own painting and decorating business. The qualifications I’ve gained has given me the skills, knowledge, and confidence to go into the industry and work professionally. I feel well prepared for the next step in my career.
Would you recommend ESC to future students?
I would definitely recommend East Surrey College to future students, especially those who prefer vocational and hands-on learning. It’s more engaging than a typical academic route and the teaching, support, and facilities are all really good.
