Wanting a chance to gain first-hand experience as soon as possible, Cyrus decided to apply for an Apprenticeship in the IT industry. Having now completed his Apprenticeship, he enjoyed working with a small team during his placement, and found the support at the College really helpful. He enjoys building and working with computers and is continuing his career in the Digital and IT industry.
Why did you choose an Apprenticeship?
An Apprenticeship appealed to me because I would prefer to study something that isn’t focused on exams, as well as Apprenticeship’s involving less debt as opposed to university. Apprenticeships also give you a good head start in life and the workplace.
Can you tell us a bit about your Apprenticeship?
I originally found the Apprenticeship on gov.uk website and applied. It was a one and a half year long course, but I managed to complete it in less time as I was able to go at my own pace.
What did your apprenticeship involve?
My Apprenticeship involves first line IT support which I find interesting. I also had to write about everything I was doing during the course as part of my portfolio assignment.
What did you enjoy most about your apprenticeship?
My workplace has a small team which means I get a lot of freedom, but I can’t choose one thing in particular as I enjoyed everything about the Apprenticeship.
What advice would you give to students considering an Apprenticeship?
My advice would be that unless you know exactly what career you want to get into and how to get there, don’t do a degree, you should focus on doing an Apprenticeship instead.
What are your future plans? University? Career aspiration?
Hopefully I can work building PC’s as I really enjoy this aspect of IT, though it is most likely that I will continue doing IT support or network support.
