From the outset, Louis knew he wanted to become a barber, but chose to study hairdressing to gain a broader skill set while working as a junior in a salon he enjoyed. Studying locally at East Surrey College provided a supportive and comfortable environment, where regular salon visits and guidance from tutors helped him build confidence,
Now running his second barbershop, Brent Walsh in Reigate, Louis is passionate about maintaining high standards and hopes to mentor newly qualified barbers, passing on the knowledge and enthusiasm that shaped his own journey.
What did you enjoy most about your course(s) and what experiences at the College stood out to you?
I’ll never forget having my auntie and nan in and giving them shampoo and sets! I loved the fact that each week I could see myself progressing, my skills developing and my knowledge increasing, which kept me motivated and wanting to learn more. The teachers were so helpful and went out of their way to make us all bond and drive us on to achieve our goals.
What journey have you taken since leaving the College, including roles, industries, skills applied, and any further education or training?
I am now running my own barbers in Reigate; this is my second barber shop. I built up my first shop in Reigate from zero customers to being fully booked every day within two years! I sold that business on, giving me the means to amalgamate with another local barber, making us joint owners in a larger premises in Reigate, Brent Walsh Barbers.
What are your future goals, and how do you feel your time at the College has helped shape them?
I’d love to help teach students barbering to the high standards that East Surrey College taught me, I’m hoping to take on a newly qualified barber to pass on my knowledge and love for barbering while watching them develop their own talents unfold into their own style and flair.
What advice would you give to current or future East Surrey College students who are considering the same path?
I’d advise to make use of all the resources available to you, especially your teachers who are very knowledgeable and approachable – don’t feel daunted by what your learning next – there’s always help from your teacher’s, peers and the other tools available to you.
