Roanna found East Surrey College to be the perfect place to study her passion of hairdressing. The practical, hands-on experience of the course has helped her find a clear career direction.
Why did you decide to study this course?
I’ve always been interested in becoming a hairdresser as it’s very hands-on. I love how practical and engaging it is, especially with clients. I saw East Surrey on a Year 10 taster day which sold the course for me.
What do you enjoy most about your course?
I love having clients in and doing their hair for them, it’s so fun. It’s also massively helped build my social skills and I have become a lot more outgoing since doing my course. My favorite area of study on the course is doing highlights; I find it so satisfying when you get the results you and your client were wanting.
What do you like most about being a student at East Surrey College?
The work experience. It is great how the college pushes us to use our skills beyond the classroom, but it also really helps to build life skills. I was lucky enough to work at a local salon and was offered to stay even after my work experience finished which is really beneficial for progressing my career.
How have you found the teaching and support given at ESC?
The teaching is great. They help guide me through things especially when I’m struggling. They are also great for helping organize exciting opportunities and trips out.
What are your plans for when you leave college?
After I finish my studies, I hope to continue working in a salon, but I would also love to further my education and look into becoming a colour specialist. I’m also interested in courses in barbering and hair up styles.
Would you recommend ESC to future students?
Absolutely! East Surrey is really good for anyone looking for a more practical course. It has a great community, and the support is always there if you need it. My confidence has really grown at East Surrey, so I would definitely recommend it.
