Pauline began her calligraphy journey at ESC 20 years ago and continues to return each term, nurturing her passion through part-time study.
What drew you to choose a Part-time course at East Surrey College?
When I retired, I decided to treat myself by doing the HND in Calligraphy. I studied full-time and absolutely loved it, so when the part-time course became available, I decided to continue. The city of London, in the guild hall I also was commissioned to do some work. I’m from Manchester and I used to work at Manchester University where the interest in art came.
What do you enjoy about the course?
I just like the act of writing in an artistic way, It’s very soothing somehow. I like the people. It’s very relaxing and amazing what you can learn because we’ve ll started by not being able to do it. Now I’m retired it’s what I look forward to in the week.
How has the course helped you in your career or personal life?
Well because I’m in my 80’s I don’t have a career. Though throught the course I’ve been commissioned to do wedding invites and so on and even some work at Guildhall in the City of London.
Do you have any advice for those looking to start a part-time course?
I’d say just go for it, none of us had experience before we started but it is amazing what you can learn.
