This practical course is a great starting point for those students looking to gain a comprehensive introduction to all aspects of animal care. You will benefit from a mix of theory combined with practical work in our custom built animal management unit which provides a hands-on opportunity to work with a variety of species including small mammals and reptiles.

This course equips you with essential skills for the animal care industry, including feeding and watering animals, maintaining animal accommodation, handling and restraining, and performing health checks. Additionally, you'll also have the chance to enhance your proficiency in math and English, while developing personal attributes such as time management, teamwork, and independent study.
Gain valuable industry exposure through our integrated work experience component. Practical sessions within the college and external placements, facilitated by your tutor, offer real-world insights and skill refinement. Explore settings like animal rescue centres or zoos to enrich your understanding of the field.
UNITS/TOPICS COVERED:
This course cover units such as:
- 201 - Safe and effective working practices in land-based industries
- 202 - Preparing to work in the land-based industries
- 216 - Assist with maintaining the health and wellbeing of animals
- 224 - Animals in the wild and their main features
- 226 - Assist with feeding and watering of animals
- 227 - Assist with the preparation and maintenance of animal accommodation
- 228 –Assist with handling and restraining of animals
There will be an opportunity to complete a Functional Skills Level 1 Qualification in Numeracy and Literacy.
EQUIPMENT NEEDED:
- Students will need to provide their own navy lab coat to be worn during practical sessions.
- Closed toed shoes must be worn at all times, boots are optional.
- Basic stationary –lever arch file, pens, paper
4 GCSEs at grade 2 or above including English and Maths (considerations made on a case-by-case basis).
A strong interest in animal care.
NOTE:
Students studying Animal Management will be required to have an up-to-date Tetanus vaccination. This is common in all environments where individuals are working closely with a range of species. This can be confirmed through your GP; you can find details on vaccination schedules on the NHS website.
Achieving and passing the course, as well as a good reference from the tutor, will allow students to move onto our Level 2 Animal Management course.
There is a continued assessment throughout the programme, allowing students to improve and develop continually. Assessment comes in a range of forms including leaflets, handbooks, essays and reports, practical assessment and observation, class tests, presentations, discussion seminars and practical projects.
Students aged 16 to 18, or those aged 16 to 24 who have a valid EHCP and are studying a full-time course, do not have to pay a course fee.
Students aged 19+ (without an EHCP) may have to pay tuition fees. Please contact Client Services for more information.
