Our well-equipped animal management unit provides a hands-on opportunity to work with a variety of species including small mammals and reptiles. This course equips you with essential skills for the animal care industry, including feeding and watering animals, maintaining animal accommodation, handling and restraining, assessing animal behaviours, and basic animal biology.
As part of this course you'll also have the chance to enhance your proficiency in Maths and English, while developing personal attributes such as time management, teamwork, and independent study.
You will gain valuable industry exposure through our integrated work experience component. Practical sessions within the college and external placements, facilitated by your tutor, offer real-world insights and skill refinement. Explore settings like animal rescue centres or zoos to enrich your understanding of the field.

EQUIPMENT NEEDED:
- Students will need to provide their own navy lab coat to be worn during practical sessions. A uniform link will be provided upon enrolment.
- Closed toed shoes must be worn at all times, boots are optional.
- Basic stationary – lever arch file, pens, paper.
5 GCSE grade 9-3 (A*-D) including English and Maths; or City and Guilds Level 1 Diploma (Merit) and GCSE grade 9-3 (A*-D) in English and Maths.
A strong interest in animal care.
NOTE:
Students studying Animal Management will be required to have an up-to-date Tetanus vaccination. This is common in all environments where individuals are working closely with a range of species.This can be confirmed through your GP; you can find details on vaccination schedules on the NHS website.
Achieving and passing the course, as well as a good reference from the tutor, will allow students to move onto a Level 3 Animal Management qualification.
There is continual assessment throughout the programme that allows students to constantly improve and develop their portfolio. Assessment comes in a range of forms including leaflets, handbooks, essays and reports, practical assessment and observation, class tests, presentations, discussion seminars and practical projects.
Students aged 16 to 18, or those aged 16 to 24 who have a valid EHCP and are studying a full-time course, do not have to pay a course fee.
Students aged 19+ (without an EHCP) may have to pay tuition fees. Please contact Client Services for more information.
