This Higher Technical Qualification (HTQ) has been developed to align with specific Occupational Standards, ensuring it meets the needs of the construction industry.
It is ideal for individuals with experience in construction who are looking to advance their careers. The course also covers essential techniques in site investigation and evaluation, exploring how these processes impact the design, construction, and maintenance of buildings and their substructures.
This qualification provide progression into the workplace either directly or via study at university and are designed to meet employer’s needs.
PROGRAMME STRUCTURE:
Your mode of study will depend on your own personal circumstances and will be part-time. An individual timetable will be discussed with you at the start of the course and will depend on the units that you are studying each year. As most of our students are employed in various industries the pathway chosen units will reflect these backgrounds.
This HTQ is divided into eight units and any future HND pathway a total of sixteen (including 8 in one year for HTQ achievement).
Where possible, educational visits will be organized to give you access to external resources to aid in your understanding of the topics being presented. You may also be given presentations from external speakers with specialist knowledge in a particular area. Some units may also require you to work with external organizations as part of the delivery and assessment of that unit.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
- Qualification Time Higher National (HTQ) = 1,200 hours
- Total Qualification credit value: a minimum of 120 credits. This is made up of eight units, each with a value of 15 credits.
- Total Guided Learning (GL) Higher National (HTQ) = 480 hours

COURSE QUALITY ASSURANCE Â
The External Examiner will provide us with action points for improving the quality of the course and throughout the year we will continuously monitor the course and how it is running.

EQUIPMENT NEEDED:
This will depend on units taken. Lecturers will be able to advise students.
Two A-Levels grade C (equivalent to 64 UCAS points) or equivalent Level 3 qualification in Construction & The Built Environment. Alternatively previous experience in the construction industry will be considered.
Higher National Diploma, University Degree, Professional Qualification such as RICS or CIOB.
Assessment is based on a combination of coursework, assignments and assessment will vary from unit to unit. You will also be required to undertake some group and project work. You will learn hands-on skills such as drawing, setting out and measuring and learn to use industry standard software.
The tuition fee stated is per year and may increase in following years. Please be aware that there may be additional costs for equipment and educational visits. This information will be provided at interview.
Student loans and financial support
Full-time and Part-time students from the UK/EU who are studying for a Higher Education course can apply to the Student Loans Company (www.slc.co.uk) for a Tuition Fee Loan for the full amount (this will be paid directly to the College). Additionally, Full-time UK-only students can apply for a Maintenance Loan (to cover living costs). The Government have also introduced the Maintenance Loans to Part-time students. Evidence of an approved loan must be provided at enrolment in the form of the Payment Advice letter provided by the Student Loans Company.
