This vocational qualification is designed to equip you with the technical skills and knowledge for a career in quantity surveying. This course is aligned with Skills England occupational standards providing a pathway to employment or higher education. You will learn about cost estimation, contract management, and financial control, with a mix of classroom learning and practical, work-related activities.
Equivalent to the first year of a university degree, the course develops the practical and personal skills necessary for a role in this exciting and rapidly expanding sector.
Quantity surveyors oversee project budgets, assess client needs, calculate costs, set timelines, and track construction progress. This course is designed to meet the needs of employers in the construction quantity surveying field. You'll gain a comprehensive introduction to construction and the various functions of quantity surveying. Key themes explored include:
- Developing knowledge of quantity surveying practice
- Recognising the use of digital applications in quantity surveying
- Acquiring skills in material take-off and estimation
- Advancing communication skills in presentations and project report writing
- Gaining an understanding of legal frameworks in quantity surveying
- Developing knowledge of Tendering and Procurement for construction projects
You will be assessed on 8 units, 7 compulsory and 1 option.
The compulsory units are:
- Construction Design Project
- The Construction Environment
- Measurement and Estimating
- Tender and Procurement
- Construction Economics & Sustainability
- Quantity Surveying Practice
- Law & Legal Frameworks in Quantity Surveying
Two A-Levels grade C (equivalent to 64 UCAS points) or equivalent Level 3 qualification in relevant subjects. Alternatively previous experience in the construction industry will be considered.
Successful completion of this course will allow you to progress to higher level study or employment.
Assessment is based on a combination of coursework, assignments and assessment will vary from unit to unit.
The tuition fee stated is per year and may increase in following years. Please be aware that there may be additional costs for equipment and educational visits. This information will be provided at interview.
Student loans and financial support
Full-time and Part-time students from the UK/EU who are studying for a Higher Education course can apply to the Student Loans Company (www.slc.co.uk) for a Tuition Fee Loan for the full amount (this will be paid directly to the College). Additionally, Full-time UK-only students can apply for a Maintenance Loan (to cover living costs). The Government have also introduced the Maintenance Loans to Part-time students. Evidence of an approved loan must be provided at enrolment in the form of the Payment Advice letter provided by the Student Loans Company.
