This qualification is useful for anyone who would like to develop their use of counselling skills for use in either work or a personal capacity. You will investigate the knowledge and skills needed to use counselling skills and engage in a helping interaction appropriately.
There is a strong focus and emphasis on experiential learning developed through skills practice. You will be required to allow additional study time in addition to the guided learning of 30 hours (GLH) outlined below. GLH is part of the total qualification time of 50 hours (TQT). TQT includes all other time taken in preparation, study or any other form of participation in education or training but not under the direct supervision of a lecturer, supervisor or tutor (regarded as independent study). A commitment to learning and improving academic writing is required to include undertaking reading of core textbooks relating to the leading thinkers within the profession.
- Enhance and improve verbal communication skills, especially empathy, the ability to listen and respect silence.
- Enhance and improve written communication skills.
- Provide a basic understanding of what counselling is about and be able to compare and contrast counselling with other forms of helping activities.
- Develop an understanding of what counselling training entails and provide assistance to support learners in making a more informed choice as to whether or not she/he is suited to undertake vocational counselling training as opposed to other types of training.
- Introduce learners to experiential learning processes that will include a high element of personal growth work, developing further self-confidence and self-esteem. This element of the course is about self-awareness a challenging and key aspect of your learning.
- Prepare learners to progress onto appropriate further qualifications.

- Unit 1 - The professional context of counselling - 9 GLH
- Unit 2 - Communication skills in helping relationships - 15 GLH
- Unit 3 - An introduction to personal development - 6 GLH

- An interview will be conducted to ensure the suitability of all applicants to undertake the level of self-awareness required in exploration of the self and the impact of working with others.
This course provides the progression route for Level 3 Certificate in Counselling. Note: the college provides the full route for acquiring professional counselling qualification status. Upon completion of level 2 you are not qualified to use the status of a counsellor or to practice in any professional capacity.
There is a continued assessment throughout the programme, allowing students to improve and develop continually. Assessment comes in a range of forms including reports, practical assessment and observation, online assessments and presentations.
The fees displayed are the MAXIMUM payable by adults aged 19+ unless you qualify for a concessionary fee. Please be aware that there may be additional costs for materials.

Tuition fees may be waived or reduced if you are on a low income or receive certain benefits.
If you don’t qualify for a concession, you will need to pay for your course in full or apply for an Advanced Learner Loan to cover the cost (Level 3-6 courses only).
