Counselling Level 2

• Enhance and improve verbal communication skills, especially empathy, the ability to listen and respect silence.
• Enhance and improve written communication skills.
• Provide a basic understanding of what counselling is about and be able to compare and contrast counselling with other forms of helping activities.
• Develop an understanding of what counselling training entails and provide assistance to support learners in making a more informed choice as to whether or not she/he is suited to undertake vocational counselling training as opposed to other types of training.
• Introduce learners to experiential learning processes that will include a high element of personal growth work, developing further self-confidence and self-esteem. This element of the course is about self-awareness a challenging and key aspect of your learning.
• Prepare learners to progress onto appropriate further qualifications.

There is a strong focus and emphasis on experiential learning developed through skills practice. You will be required to allow additional study time in addition to the guided learning of 30 hours (GLH) outlined below. GLH is part of the total qualification time of 50 hours (TQT). TQT includes all other time taken in preparation, study or any other form of participation in education or training but not under the direct supervision of a lecturer, supervisor or tutor (regarded as independent study). A commitment to learning and improving academic writing is required to include undertaking reading of core textbooks relating to the leading thinkers within the profession.

• Unit 1 - The professional context of counselling - 9 GLH
• Unit 2 - Communication skills in helping relationships - 15 GLH
• Unit 3 - An introduction to personal development - 6 GLH

EQUIPMENT NEEDED:

• Pens and highlighters
• Notepad
• Folder with 10-part divider

• GCSE English grade 9-4 (A* - C)
• An interview will be conducted to ensure the suitability of all applicants to undertake the level of self-awareness required in exploration of the self and the impact of working with others

Learners will produce a portfolio of evidence which will be subject to internal assessment, internal and external moderation. Specific requirements and restrictions may apply to individual units within the qualification. All assessed grades are not final and will be subject to both internal and external moderation.
