National Careers Week 2020

National Careers Week 2020

Date: 06 March 2020

This week was National Careers Week, which celebrates the careers guidance and opportunities available to students across the UK.

Here's a rundown of everything that took place this week!

Student Support

At East Surrey College, we are proud to offer impartial advice and guidance to all students, supporting them with finding work placements, jobs and Apprenticeships.

Our friendly staff based in the Job Zone can help students with finding work placements, writing CVs and cover letters and sorting placement paperwork.

#CareerStories

Throughout the week on social media, we shared #CareerStories of our staff, showcasing the different routes to rewarding careers. We asked our staff to share the skills they had gained in their first jobs, and here are a few of their responses:

Rebecca Taylor, Vice Principal - Curriculum & Standards
First job:
detasseling corn over a summer in cornfields in Ontario!
“resilience, teamwork, and getting up early in the morning, every morning! All of these skills been instrumental in my career progression.”

David Rabjohns, Director of Learning - Service Industries
First job: “picking garlic on a farm. At 16, I was then a junior assistant in a hairdressing salon”
"I learnt the value of hard work and how to treat customers and colleagues with respect and tolerance."

Jayne Dickinson, Principal (ESC) & CEO (College Group)
First job: "working in the Littlewood store cafeteria"
“People skills, customer service and the importance of teamwork to get the job done quickly”

Richard Brooks, Business Development Manager
First job: "Helping an elderly couple run the local pet shop on Saturdays"
“I gained skills in customer service, that developed during that time and have always been in use during my career. I still meet new people and enjoy engaging in conversation and supporting their business needs”

Career Polls

Over on our Instagram account, we posted some job-related questions, to see what you want from a career! Around 60 people answered each poll, and here are the responses!

  • 62% would prefer to work inside
  • More people (77%) would rather work the day shift than overnight
  • 63% would enjoy working on-site instead of an office
  • Most people would prefer working in the UK (66%), rather than abroad (34%)
