This accessibility statement applies to East Surrey College’s website www.esc.ac.uk.

This website is run by East Surrey College, part of the Orbital South Colleges Group and supported by Jarret & Lam.  We want as many people as possible to be able to use this website. For example, that means you should be able to:

  • change colours, contrast levels and fonts
  • zoom in up to 300% without the text spilling off the screen
  • navigate most of the website using just a keyboard
  • navigate most of the website using speech recognition software
  • listen to most of the website using a screen reader (including the most recent versions of JAWS, NVDA and VoiceOver)

We’ve also made the website text as simple as possible to understand.

Technical information about this website’s accessibility

East Surrey College is committed to making its website accessible, in accordance with the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018.

Compliance status

This website is partially compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.1 AA standard, due to the non-compliances listed below.

  • WCAG 1.4.5 Images of Text
  • WCAG 1.1.1 Non-text content
  • WCAG 2.4.2 Page titled

Non-accessible content

The content listed below is non-accessible for the following reasons.

WCAG 1.4.5 Images of Text
Some images feature text within them. Images of text cause problems for users who need to adjust how visual content like font size, spacing or colours are displayed. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.4.5 (images of text). We plan to remove text with images by April 2023.

WCAG 1.1.1 Non-text content
Some images do not have a text alternative, so people using a screen reader cannot access the information. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.1.1 (non-text content).

We plan to add text alternatives for all images by April 2023. When we publish new content we’ll make sure our use of images meets accessibility standards.

WCAG 2.4.2 Page titled
PDF documents do not currently have titles that describe the topic or purpose of the page. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 2.4.2 (page titled).

We plan to add titles to all PDF documents by April 2023. When we publish new content we’ll make sure our PDF meets accessibility standards.

Manual checks included using each page without a mouse, viewing the page at different zoom settings, and simulating viewing the page on a small screen.

The automated tests were completed using the latest version of Axe.

Tests were completed using different settings in the Google Chrome browser on Windows 10 Enterprise with a 23.8-inch screen.

We used this approach and tested 20 sample pages on our website.
