Public Services Level 3

Public Services Level 3 - Finlay

Finlay completed Public Services Level 3 at ESC and was excited to begin a career in the Armed Forces. He's now in the British Army, within the 1st Battalion Grenadier Guards.

"As part of the household division, we are a dual role infantry regiment where we both deploy overseas and also work as Queen's Guards. This involves guarding palaces and fortresses like Buckingham Palace, St James's Palace, Windsor Castle and the Tower of London."

When preparing for his career, the staff helped Finlay with his application and provided him with advice on how to prepare for assessments. Finlay commented how units such as Navigation and Expeditions really helped him with his career as "I've  learned skills I have never forgotten."

In his current role, Finlay particularly enjoys the practical side as, within his infantry, he carries out a range of exercises. He especially enjoys "when you're the GPMG gunner for the section - hands-down the best role anyone can have."

When looking to the future, Finlay is confidently taking each day as it comes, but following a deployment to Iraq next year, he is hoping to get promoted or complete further training courses.

Reflecting on the advice given by his tutors, Finlay commented:

"Listen to the course leaders, they have real-life experience from being in service. If you do want to pursue a life in the Armed Services then do plenty of research into the job role that suits you."

Recently, Finlay come back to College to meet our current Public Services students and lead them in various drill activities! Explore our Public Services courses here and apply now for September.
