This creative course provides a fantastic opportunity to learn how to create computer games, animations and 3D models in one of the fastest developing creative industries in the world. You will gain a solid foundation of the creative processes involved in 3D modelling, environment design, character design, animation, concept art, and game engines. You will learn how to turn your ideas into a fully working video game or animation.
The first year of this Games, Animation & 3D Modelling UAL Level 3 course gives a general introduction to the different skills and roles in this industry. This will cover technical and creative aspects including 3D modelling, 2D & 3D animation, sound production, programming, digital graphics, concept design, game engines, and history of gaming. The second year will allow you to directly develop your team working skills through a group project, delve into a topic of your choice via an in-depth study, and produce a portfolio that will support with employment or study at a higher level.
You will learn how to use industry-standard software including Blender, Unity Engine, Unreal Engine, Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Premiere Pro) and many other software.
The course is taught by industry professional animation and games design lecturers and students have benefited from our collaboration with various gaming companies including Creative Assembly, DPS Games, Supermassive Games and GamesAid.
UNITS/TOPICS COVERED:
The course is completely project based, each year consists of four projects:
Year 1
- Project 1 – Creative Catalyst & Introduction to Practical Skills | Using Blender to create 3D models and animations.
- Project 2 – Scene Design | Utilising game engines and programming to create a prototype game.
- Project 3 – Masters of Media | Researching an industry professional to inspire a creative media product.
- Project 4 – Final Major Project | Producing a creative media product of your choice.)
Year 2
- Project 1 – Fairytales | A group project that is centred around the idea of genres, audiences and themes.
- Project 2 – Professional Practice | Creating Personal Statements and CVs for university or work.
- Project 3 – Specialist Study | An in-depth essay into a creative media topic, learning the foundations of academic writing.
- Project 4 – Final Major Project | Producing an extended creative media product of your choice.
EQUIPMENT NEEDED:
Access to a mid-range computer/laptop at home to complete coursework.
TRIPS:
There will be trips and visits during the course that students will need to pay for.
5 GCSEs at grade 4 or above including English and Maths; or a Level 2 qualification plus GCSE grade 4 or equivalent in English and Maths.
The course is equivalent to three A Levels and provides the progression route for a career in the creative industries, university level study or an apprenticeship.
There is continued assessment throughout the programme across a range of projects, allowing students to improve and develop continually. Assessment comes in a range of forms including creative projects, portfolio of evidence and presentations.
Students aged 16 to 18, or those aged 16 to 24 who have a valid EHCP and are studying a full-time course, do not have to pay a course fee.
Students aged 19+ (without an EHCP) may have to pay tuition fees. Please contact Client Services for more information.
