This is a practical, work-related course. You will learn by completing projects and coursework based on realistic workplace situations, activities, and demands. As well as learning about employment in the care sector, you will develop the knowledge and skills needed for starting a valuable career in this area.
You will need to develop good study skills including the ability to research independently and meet deadlines. You will be required to source a variety of work placements, and there are two exams in each year.
UNITS/TOPICS COVERED:
Mandatory and vocational units are subject to change but will include approximately six/seven units each year.
Year 1 –Foundation Diploma
Course work units:
- Meeting individual care and support needs
- Policy in Health and Social Care
- Principles of Safe Practice
- Nutritional Health
Exam units include:
- Human Lifespan Development
- Working in Health & Social Care (+ 100 hours of placement)
Year 2 –Extended Diploma
Course work units:
- Supporting Individuals with Additional Needs
- Promoting Public Health
- Infection Prevention & Control
- Physiological Disorders and their Care
- Work Experience in Health and Social Care (+ 100 hours of placement)
Exam units:
- Anatomy and Physiology in Health and Social Care
- Enquiries into current research in Health and Social Care
EQUIPMENT NEEDED:
- Textbooks
- Ring binder, dividers, pens, paper, plastic wallets etc
- Students are required to purchase uniform which consists of polo shirts and a fleece (optional)
- You will also be expected to wear appropriate trousers/skirt and shoes to college and to placement
- Access to IT (compulsory)
5 GCSEs at grade 4 or above including English and Maths; or a Level 2 qualification plus GCSE grade 4 or equivalent in English and Maths.
A clean DBS check is required.
- Employment in the health sector, including care homes and day centres working with a variety of people with care and support needs.
- Extended Diploma - subject to passing year 1, positive reference from course tutor, good attendance, and punctuality and positive attitude to learning.
- University entrance following completion of the Extended Diploma, in subjects such as Nursing, Social Work, Radiography, Paramedic Sciences and Counselling. (Some of these will need GCSE Science at Grade 4 or above).
There is a continued assessment throughout the programme, allowing students to improve and develop continually. Assessment comes in a range of forms including reports, practical assessment and observation, computer based examination, online assessments and presentations.
Students aged 16 to 18, or those aged 16 to 24 who have a valid EHCP and are studying a full-time course, do not have to pay a course fee.
Students aged 19+ (without an EHCP) may have to pay tuition fees. Please contact Client Services for more information.
