This course offers those interested in working within care or social care environments the chance to develop their practical skills including work experience. You are required to complete a minimum of 60 hours work placement (1 day a week) in a nursery, residential care home or any other suitable placement.
All students will develop a general understanding of health and science:
- Working within the health and science sector
- Health, safety and environmental regulations
- Managing information and data
- Principles of good scientific and clinical practice
- Core science concepts including the structure of cells, tissues and large molecules, genetics, microbiology and immunology
They will also learn about topics specific to health, including:
- Understanding the healthcare sector
- Providing person-centred care
- Supporting health and wellbeing
- Further knowledge of both human anatomy and physiology and of diseases and disorders
- Infection prevention and control
SPECIALISMS:
In addition to the core content, each student must choose one of the following specialisms:
- Supporting the adult nursing team
- Supporting the midwifery team
- Supporting the mental health team
- Supporting the care of children and young people
- Supporting the therapy teams
EQUIPMENT NEEDED:
- Textbooks
- Ring binder, dividers, pens, paper, plastic wallets etc.
- Students are required to purchase uniform for their work placement (optional)
- Access to IT
- Five GCSEs grade 9-4 (A*- C), which must include both English and Maths, or
- Level 2 Extended Certificate/Diploma Merit/Distinction and GCSEs grade 9-4 (A*-C) in English and Maths
- A clean DBS
- Employment in the health sector, including care homes and day centres working with a variety of people with care and support needs.
- University entrance following completion of the course, in subjects such as Nursing, Social Work, Radiography, Paramedic Sciences and Counselling (some of these will need GCSE Science at Grade 4 or above).
At the end of Year 1, you will complete two exams and an Employer Set Project.
In Year 2, you will complete an Employer Set Project based on your occupationalspecialism.
You will be required to complete 315 work placement hours over the two-year study programme.
Students aged 16 to 18, or those aged 16 to 24 who have a valid EHCP and are studying a full-time course, do not have to pay a course fee.
Students aged 19+ (without an EHCP) may have to pay tuition fees. Please contact Client Services for more information.
