This introductory course is an ideal option for those wanting to work in the various services, such as the Police Service, Prison Service, Fire and Rescue Services, Royal Air Force, British Army and Royal Navy. It also provides a pathway onto the Level 2 programme. This course is disciplined and practical and offers a wide range of subjects that will prepare students for careers within the services, giving them an idea of potential career paths. It offers a range of practical experience from expeditions, team building and leadership management to career planning and health and fitness.
This course is suitable for learners who can demonstrate the physical and mental robustness required for a career in the public/protective services. The course is often challenging, preparing learners for a sector that requires a positive mindset, resilience and discipline.
Uniform is mandatory and must be purchased at the beginning of the course.
UNITS/TOPICS COVERED:
All BTEC Level 1 Students will study these mandatory units:
- Being organised
- Developing a personal progression plan
- Working with others
- Researching a topic
Public Services students will also study the subject-specific units:
- Finding out about Public Services
- Taking part in fitness testing
- Responding to an incident
- Planning and navigating a route
- Contributing to your community
- Sport and Adventurous activities
Students will also need to complete a work experience or work-based project programme, totalling 35 hours in the year. All units need to be passed in order to complete the qualification.
EQUIPMENT NEEDED:
You will need to purchase uniform items consisting of trousers, belt, polo shirts, hoodie, a waterproof jacket and black boots. Uniform can be ordered during enrolment. You will need pens, paper and relevant stationery to complete classroom tasks.
Please be aware that there will be a ÂŁ100 non-refundable course fee to cover expeditions, trips and any associated materials required to run the course, including practical lesson resources and assignment/revision materials. The fee will need to be paid at enrolment or within the first 4 weeks of term (by agreement), as expeditions, trips and visits are booked in advance. Please note that this fee does not include uniform. Further information will be available from the curriculum staff at interview.
4 GCSE grade 9-2 (A*-E) including English and Maths.
Obtaining a Merit or above will allow you to move on to a Public Services Level 2 Extended Certificate, or another Level 2 qualification at the College.
Level 1 BTEC is a portfolio-based assessment programme that allows students to submit coursework at specific dates throughout the academic year. Assessment comes in a range of forms, and includes essays and reports, practical assessment and observation, class tests, presentations, discussion seminars and practical projects.
Students aged 16 to 18, or those aged 16 to 24 who have a valid EHCP and are studying a full-time course, do not have to pay a course fee.
Students aged 19+ (without an EHCP) may have to pay tuition fees. Please contact Client Services for more information.
