This is a practical, work related course, which develops the necessary skills, knowledge and understanding to provide you with a sound, basic public services grounding. This qualification will give you experience in a wide range of skills from leadership, teamwork and verbal and non-verbal communication. You will also complete work experience or a work based project during non-college days.
The Level 2 Extended Certificate Public Services course is disciplined, practical, and offers a wide range of subject areas that will prepare students for careers within the Uniformed Public Services, these include the Armed Forces, Emergency Services, HM Prison Service, the Civil Service and the Coast Guard.
The Course includes a number of trips and visits that are designed to support learning within the classroom and enhance the students’experience. Trips include visiting the Houses of Parliament, a self-guided crime tour of London, and the Imperial War Museum. Other practical activities include expeditions and outdoor adventurous activities.
The course is continuously assessed through assignments, practical project tasks and case studies. There are two externally assessed units as part of this qualification. It uses practical activities, presentations and involvement with local Public Services wherever possible.
This course is suitable for learners who can demonstrate the physical and mental robustness required for a career in the public/protective services. The course is often challenging, preparing learners for a sector that requires a positive mindset, resilience and discipline.
Uniform is mandatory and must be purchased at the beginning of the course.
UNITS/TOPICS COVERED:
Within the course, students will study units covering:
- Role and work of Public Services
- Working skills in the Public Services
- Health, fitness and lifestyle
- Citizenship, society and the Public Services
- Crime and its effects on society and individuals
- Land navigation using map and compass
- Volunteering
- Multi-day expeditions
Students will also complete a 35-hour work experience or work-based project programme during the year. There will be an opportunity to complete or retake GCSE in English and Maths. All units need to be passed in order to complete the qualification.
EQUIPMENT NEEDED:
You will need to purchase uniform items consisting of trousers, belt, polo shirts, hoodie, a waterproof jacket and black boots. Uniform can be ordered during enrolment. You will need pens, paper and relevant stationery to complete classroom tasks.
Please be aware that there will be a ÂŁ100 non-refundable course fee to cover expeditions, trips and any associated materials required to run the course, including practical lesson resources and assignment/revision materials. The fee will need to be paid at enrolment or within the first 4 weeks of term (by agreement), as expeditions, trips and visits are booked in advance. Please note that this fee does not include uniform. Further information will be available from the curriculum staff at interview.
5 GCSE grade 9-3 (A*-D) including English and Maths.
Obtaining a merit or above will allow you to move on to a Public Services Level 3 Extended Diploma, or another Level 3 qualification at the College. It can also lead to a range of jobs working in industries including, and not limited to, sport, outdoor and adventurous, social and youth work and events. If progressing to level 3 you can only be enrolled on to Maths or English and not both.
There is a continued assessment throughout the programme, allowing students to improve and develop continually. Assessment comes in a range of forms including reports, practical assessment and observation, online assessments and presentations.
Students aged 16 to 18, or those aged 16 to 24 who have a valid EHCP and are studying a full-time course, do not have to pay a course fee.
Students aged 19+ (without an EHCP) may have to pay tuition fees. Please contact Client Services for more information.
