ESC Celebrates Christmas in the Community
Date: 16 December 2021
Students and staff across East Surrey College have been bringing festive cheer to the College and local community, with a selection of end of term events!
Our Public Services and Health & Social Care students have been busy collecting items to collate for gift boxes, to be given to patients at East Surrey Hospital. The students collected a range of items including toiletries, books and craft supplies, which were then packaged into over 100 decorated boxes.
Public Services Lecturer, Steve Grant, commented:
“Traditionally at Christmas, students at ESC have supported young children at East Surrey Hospital. This year, we decided to support the geriatric wards. This Christmas Day present is just a small reminder that they’re not forgotten.”
The students themselves have found this a valuable project, with the opportunity to give back to the community. Public Services Level 3 student Tailor-Rose shared:
“I used to work as a Carer and saw how a lot of the patients didn’t have family around Christmas time. Everyone deserves to be happy at Christmas.”
The students and staff delivered the boxes to East Surrey Hospital, where they were gratefully welcomed by the staff.

Elsewhere in the local area, Life Skills Entry 1 students visited the Merstham Community Facility, where they have been volunteering each week! They were treated to a ride on the trishaws and received a lovely card from MCFT, thanking them for their hard work. They're looking forward to more volunteering in the new year.

Childcare and Health & Social Care students have also given back to others, by collecting items for a food bank. The collection will be given to St Matthew's Church in Redhill to support families around Christmas.
In the Construction department, our Carpentry & Joinery Level 1 students raised £43 for Cancer Research UK! They recently had a non-uniform day and the students decided to select CRUK as their chosen charity, with the focus on supporting young adults and children affected by cancer.

Finally, our ESOL Level 1 group celebrated the end of term by putting together a pantomime! They performed 'Cinderella' to staff, with each student taking on an iconic role.
