Motorsport students triumph at Student Motorsport Challenge (Event 1)

Date: 22 April 2022

Motorsport students at East Surrey College have been working hard on the Student Motorsport Challenge. The Challenge enables young people to get involved in the world of motorsport, by converting a donor car into a fully functioning race car, fit for the track at the Citycar Cup. Within the Challenge, East Surrey College is competing against other Colleges, semi-professionals, and professionals.

The Challenge consists of a series of seven events.  The first event, the BRSCC Race Day, was hosted at Oulton Park International on Saturday 9 April 2022. Eight of our students took part on the day, working alongside Motorsport tutors George Keith and Carl Bundy in the pit stops. Students had a great opportunity to see the mechanics behind the scenes and took turns holding up placement boards for the drivers. George commented:

“The beginning of the Student Motorsport Challenge has been really successful. I would like to thank Carl Bundy, Stefan Mohammed, Richard Ince, and Paul Mays for helping to organise the event. Thank you to senior management and our technicians Bill Darnbrook and Richard Drayson for supporting us and the students. Our students have worked incredibly hard and it’s great to see their hard work paying off”.

George also gave thanks to our professional driver, Andy Burgess, who took us to victory.

In preparation for the BRSCC race, modifications were made to the donated car in accordance with the challenge specifications. This included installing and fitting a roll cage and modifications to the suspension. In addition, the car was wrapped by our sponsor Boss Dog, organised by one of our Motorsport students Callum.

The East Surrey College team took part in two races and won 1st place in both classes throughout the race day! Our students and tutors will now focus on the next upcoming race within the Challenge on Sunday 22 May 2022.
