ESOL Summer School (pre-entry level) - Olena
Olena came to the UK from Ukraine in April 22. Before leaving Ukraine, she had a career as an Accountant.
When she first arrived, Olena felt it was essential for her to improve her English language skills to help her to integrate into society. She had last studied English 25 years ago at school in Ukraine.
She joined the ESOL summer school at ESC as part of a DWP programme for Ukranian women to learn English and introduce them to life in England.
“The summer school was very important for me to improve my English. Maya is a very, very good teacher - she makes learning English easy.”
Apart from learning English, a highlight of the course for Olena was meeting fellow Ukranians and people from many other countries including Russia, Iraq, Iran and Salvador.
Olena will continue to develop her English language skills at the College. When the war finishes, she plans to return to Ukraine and resume her career in accountancy.
“When the war finishes, many European companies will start working in the Ukraine and I want to have good enough English to work in one of these companies.”
