The course consists of five mandatory units covering the theory and practical aspects of electro-technical technology for buildings and structures, to include health and safety, electrical science, working effectively and installation practice.
Please note: This qualification does not form part of an apprenticeship framework and students will need to complete a NVQ Diploma to become a qualified electrician however, students may transfer this qualification into the NVQ framework at a later date.
The course is divided into theory classroom lessons and practical sessions in our workshop, where you will construct electrical projects using a wide range of materials.

- Health & Safety in Building Services Engineering
- Communication Within Building Services Engineering
- Principles of Electrical Science
- Electrical Installations Technology
- Installation of Wiring Systems and Enclosures
EQUIPMENT NEEDED:
For students to gain the most from their course, materials that students must provide are as follows:
- IET On-Site Guide to BS7671; 2018 (2018)
- Calculator (non-programmable)
- Stationery (pens, pencils, A4 folder, etc.)

All students will be required to wear College uniform.
Steel toe capped boots must be worn at all time when in the workshops.
5 GCSEs at grade 3 or above including English and Maths; or a Level 1 qualification plus English and Maths at the appropriate level.
On completion of this qualification candidates may progress into employment as an electrician’s mate or to the following City & Guilds qualifications (subject to suitable experience):
- Electrical Installations (Buildings & Structures) City & Guilds Level 3 Diploma
- Electro-technical Technology (Apprenticeship) City & Guilds Level 3 NVQ Diploma
There is a continued assessment throughout the programme, allowing students to improve and develop continually. Assessment comes in a range of forms including reports, practical assessment and observation, online assessments and presentations.
Students aged 16 to 18, or those aged 16 to 24 who have a valid EHCP and are studying a full-time course, do not have to pay a course fee.
Students aged 19+ (without an EHCP) may have to pay tuition fees. Please contact Client Services for more information.
