Surrey FE - The Logo Competition Final

Surrey FE - The Logo Competition Final

Date: 12 January 2024

East Surrey College hosted the final of the logo competition for ‘Surrey FE’, a group set up by Nescot (North East Surrey College of Technology), Brooklands, Activate Learning (Guildford College) and East Surrey College with the purpose to work closer, more collaboratively to discuss new ideas and initiatives for FE education.

The brief was to design a new logo for ‘Surrey FE’ which was put in the hands and creative control of the students. Each college nominated five designs from its students to take part in the judging.

East Surrey College had 25 entries in total from Reigate School of Art, Year 2 Art, Design & Communication, Level 3 Students. Our students were able to use this as part of a live project which counted towards their work experience. The final five were selected by our Executive Team and the FE commissioner, Shelagh Legrave, during her visit in December 2023.

Students from all the colleges displayed their final logo in the Winter Garden, where they each then presented individually to the Judges. Students were able to discuss the thought process and concepts behind their design with the judging panel.

“It was a bit scary having to speak about my work to the judges. Challenging my communication skills, explaining my concepts and the process behind it. Becoming an Illustrator is something that interests me so it’s all really good practice”

Teegam Moore – Level 3 Art, Design & Communications student

After carefully listening to each and every student, the judges headed off for a private deliberation to decide a winner from each of the colleges and the final overall winner.

Everyone re-grouped for a final announcement and awards ceremony, where each judge addressed the group and gave their thoughts on the day:

“It’s the second time we’ve come together as colleges, and we have been blown away by the variety of designs, it’s incredibly difficult to work with a brief and deliver. It goes to show how coming together we can all really learn a lot about each other”

Julie Kapsalis, Nescot Principal & CEO

“All of you [students] were very professional and articulate in conversation. Everyone involved today can takeaway valuable experience as this is an excellent insight into what it may be like working in a design environment”

Christine Ricketts – Brooklands College Principal & CEO

“There has been such great passion and enthusiasm about the work on show today. It goes to show the power of creativity that we have in our colleges. Very proud and privileged to be apart of this collaboration.”

Paul Newman – Guildford College, Executive Director Activate Learning

“A large part of my role involves reviewing the skills required in the area and filling future talent, requiring me to work very closely with Colleges and I am blown away by the talent on display today”

Jack Kennedy – Surrey County Council, Head of Economy and Growth

The winners from each college were announced and each student collected their prize. Lindsay Pamphilon, CEO & Principal of Orbital South Colleges had the privilege of announcing the winner, which went to Charlotte, from East Surrey College pictured below:
