Mechanical Engineering Level 4 Apprenticeship

Mechanical Engineering Level 4 Apprenticeship - Myles

Former School(s): Carrington School (The Warwick School), Reigate College

Myles took on an Apprenticeship in Mechanical Engineering with East Surrey College and is now in his second year of studies for his Level 4 qualification. Having completed his GCSEs at Carrington School and A Levels at Reigate College, he “decided that going to University wasn’t for me and an Apprenticeship would give me a head start in the working world”.
He added that “doing an Apprenticeship gave me a chance to put the practical engineering skills and knowledge I had gained at A level into practice and helped me to gain more confidence in a working environment” and it also meant that he could “earn while you learn”.
He chose East Surrey College for his studies as he described it as “the best college in the area for providing Higher Education”. In addition to his studies, Myles is also working at the University of Surrey as a Mechanical Workshop Technician to “expand my practical knowledge” where he has taken part in an amazing project to protect keyworkers during the coronavirus crisis.

This project has involved creating PPE for local hospitals in the current pandemic, using 3D printers in a small-scale production line.

To protect fellow employees, Myles explained “we have been working in shifts in order to minimise the amount of staff members having to travel to and from work at any one time” and remarked how he wanted to help the NHS in any way as they are “the main defence against this virus and the real heroes”.
An Apprenticeship has enabled Myles to “do a job that I love whilst being paid to study and further my education" with an “extremely supportive employer” who is “always pushing me to better myself”.
