Cutting edge technology, world class innovation, and a vibrant culture to boot, engineering students have recently returned from a jam-packed and unforgettable tour of South Korea.
Thanks to the Turing Scheme, the UK’s global programme for studying, working, and living abroad, students took their learning beyond the classroom during a two-week expedition across June and July.
Learning beyond the classroom
In the heart of Seoul, our aspiring engineers were immersed in South Korea’s manufacturing might, experiencing firsthand the innovation and precision that have made the nation an industrial powerhouse.
Visits included Hyundai Motorstudio, the automotive giant’s immersive exhibition space, where students gained valuable insights into engineering processes and the innovation driving the industry’s future.
Kia Autoland and Hyundai Ulsan Plant also provided behind-the-scenes access to their manufacturing facilities, showcasing their cutting-edge vehicle production processes.
At the National Aviation Museum, students explored the history of air travel and discovered the engineering breakthroughs that have shaped modern commercial flight. For those considering a career in aeronautical engineering, it was a fantastic opportunity to gain insight into the innovations that continue to drive the industry forward.
Exploring Korea’s culture and history
Alongside industry visits, students also immersed themselves in South Korea’s rich cultural heritage, broadening their global perspectives while gaining a deeper appreciation of the country’s history, traditions and way of life.
They explored historical landmarks including Gyeongbokgung Palace, a former royal residence, and the iconic Namsan Seoul Tower, a staple of Seoul’s skyline. Visits to the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) and the UN Memorial Park in Busan encouraged students to reflect on the Korean War, the importance of international cooperation and the role of British forces in Korea’s history.
On Nami Island, otherwise known as Fairy Tale Village, the group experienced Korea’s natural beauty while learning about eco-friendly tourism culture and the arts. The group also enjoyed a performance of the internationally acclaimed Nanta, a non-verbal comedy show synonymous with South Korean culture. There was also the opportunity to tour a traditional PC room which deepened their local knowledge.
Alongside industry visits, students immersed themselves in South Korea’s rich cultural heritage. They explored famous local markets, including Gwangjang Market and Jagalchi Market, and the impressive Sungsimdang bakery, all offering a taste of local food and everyday life.
By blending academic learning with real-world industry visits and cultural immersion, the programme provided students with valuable insights into one of the world’s leading technology economies. More than just a study tour, it offered an opportunity to build confidence, expand global horizons and inspire our engineers of the future.
