Students and staff came together this morning in recognition of Armistice Day 2021, remembering and honouring all those who suffered or died in war.
Public Services students began the ceremony with a parade, standing in formation around a commemorative plaque, which originally formed part of a memorial on the old East Surrey College site. The plaque commemorates residents of the Southern Provincial Police Orphanage, who lost their lives in World War One.
The Last Post signalled the two-minute silence, before the sounding of ‘The Rouse’ and a reading of the war poem ‘The Redeemer’ by Siegfried Sassoon. This was followed by the wreath-laying, first by Jayne Dickinson, Principal & Chief Executive and Andrew Baird, Chair of the Corporation. Students from each curriculum area then laid wreaths, many of which had been designed and created by the students themselves.
We were proud to mark the occasion with members of staff who have served or continue to serve in the Armed Forces. Thank you to all students, staff and visitors for their cooperation and respect during this event.
