2 March 2026
On 2 March, National Careers Week 2026 started off strong as we welcomed a wide variety of industries into the college to speak with our students. Careers Week provides learners with new career ideas and the chance to ask questions on how to make their future dreams a reality.

We welcomed Fleet Service Coordinator Luke Gurung from the British Army to speak with our Public Services and Health and Social Care students.
Luke explained his unique career trajectory in the military services. Overcoming adversity, living with a speech impediment, he has thrived in the army and discussed highlights such as jumping out of planes and working in many countries such as Afghanistan.
Students were able to ask any questions about working in the Army, and Luke took the time to talk through the wide variety of jobs available, from chefs to tank crewman and more.
Christopher Harris, Careers, Advice and Guidance Advisor, spoke with students during the talk: “it’s a career which is full of different opportunities, and it’s definitely one worth thinking about if you want to test yourself, travel and have new experiences.”

Hairdressing Level 2 and Level 3 students were joined by Sue Jane, who owns Sue Jane Hair and Beauty Salon in Horley. With over 45 years of experience, Sue highlighted the importance of customer service and refining your skills during her talk.
Reflecting on starting a career in the Hair and Beauty industry, she said, “For students starting out, you are going to be working your way up as you gain experience. And that’s absolutely fine, because the rest of the salon team will always be highly experienced and ready to help.”
Sue was joined by Kayla, who is completing her Level 3 Hairdressing course while working part-time in Sue’s salon.

Throughout the rest of the day, we were joined by charity Platform 7teen who worked closely with our ESOL students, helping them prepare for job interviews and new career opportunities through interactive role play scenarios.
Our Childcare students also made the most of a visit from Bright Horizons, which allowed them the chance to ask questions about progression and what to expect once they finish their studies.
Ginny Collins, Workforce Career Manager from Surrey Care Association , spoke with our Health and Social Care students on how to kickstart a career in the industry, as well as the wide variety of jobs in the sector.
It’s been a fantastic start to Careers Week and we’re excited to see what’s next in store!
