On Thursday 20 March, East Surrey College students and staff joined together in the Auditorium for Iftar, the breaking of their fast during the holy month of Ramadan.
ESOL students stayed late on Thursday and began their evening in the College kitchen for some life skills, preparing the food. Guided by staff, students got ready for the occasion by preparing and cooking an array of food including chicken, fish, rice and salad.

After sunset, practicing Muslims broke their fast with dates and water, followed by food that was shared with those of all faiths and none. The Iftar united a wealth of different cultures and was a great opportunity for students and staff to come together and learn about each other’s traditional cuisines. Abdelshafi Yousef Mohammed, an ESOL student at ESC said, ‘It was brilliant, and I liked eating together, I feel the college cares about me and my faith.’

ESOL Programme Manager, Alam Begum also expressed her gratitude at the success of the event, saying ‘It was truly heartwarming to see our ESOL learners come together to celebrate the beauty of diversity by cooking Iftar during the sacred month of Ramadan’
‘Their teamwork, joy, and shared spirit of unity were incredibly inspiring. The smiles on their faces were priceless, reflecting the warmth and inclusivity that make our community so special. I couldn’t be prouder of them.’
Thank you to all those who joined us for Iftar and happy Ramadan to all those celebrating the holy month.
