Supported interns from Orbital South Colleges recently returned from a rewarding trip to Tenerife as part of the Government’s Turing Scheme, gaining valuable cultural experiences and lasting memories.

Starting off strong, the group visited Loro Parque, where they saw gorillas, big cats, penguins and a wide range of marine life, learning about their natural habitats and care needs along the way. After the busy visit, they took a short walk into town, putting their Spanish skills to good use in souvenir shops and while ordering lunch at a local pizzeria.

Siam Park, widely regarded as the world’s best waterpark, followed on day two. Some students chose to relax along the lazy river and unwind at the man-made beach, while others braved the park’s famous water slides, including Tower of Power which reaches speeds of 80km per hour.

The adventurous spirit continued the next day with a summit of Mount Teide. With a coach journey to aid the team, interns learned about the ecological climate of the Tenerife on their assent, and how the different climates support the island’s agriculture. Once at the top, the team explored rock formations and the extensive dry lava trails.

After a packed week of activities, the group set off on a boat trip, spotting whales and dolphins as they swam alongside the vessel. On the return to port, students relaxed at the front of the catamaran, catching sight of a full rainbow stretching across the skies of Tenerife.

During downtime, the fun continued with games of mini golf, pool, and card games by the poolside. Evening entertainment featured live music, acrobatics, and even belly dancing, which students – alongside a few reluctant staff members – had the chance to try themselves. On the final evening of relaxation, the group took time to reflect on their achievements and their time away by writing postcards for loved ones back home.
Reflecting on the trip, Fiona Johnstone, Director of Learning for Foundation Learning, said:
“I’m so proud of all the students for really stepping out of their comfort zone on this trip of a lifetime. It’s been fantastic to watch their curiosity and confidence grow as they took on new challenges and faced their fears. For some it was their first time leaving the UK, and for many the first time being away from their parents or carers. They all took it in their stride and I’m immensely proud of each and every one of them. It was such a privilege to share this experience with our amazing Interns. I would also like to publicly thank the whole staff team who supported our group during the trip. Their support allowed our learners to enjoy a holiday of a lifetime.”
The Turing trip gave interns the chance to develop new skills, experience different cultures, and build confidence beyond the classroom. Through group activities and shared downtime, they strengthened friendships and created lasting memories, marking a fitting and memorable end to their time at Orbital South Colleges.
