On Tuesday 9 September, a group of adults who are supported by the charitable organisation Active Prospects joined a steering group at East Surrey College to help shape their tailored learning needs for the upcoming autumn term.
The steering group was established following Active Prospects’ initial request for cooking classes catered to adults with learning disabilities. After the success of these sessions, both organisations decided to deepen their collaboration and set up the group to ensure courses meet the specific needs and preferences of supported adults.

ESC Adult Learning Manager, Rory Brelsford-Stewart led the session, highlighting the importance of creating learning experiences that are personalised to the group – he discussed with learners what they would like to cover, how long for and when they would like to run sessions. The steering group carefully selected a variety of topics, including digital, drawing, floristry, Microsoft and photography classes.
Helen Guest, Co-production and Engagement Officer for Active Prospects expressed enthusiasm for the new programme:
‘I’m delighted to share that supported adult learning courses will start this Autumn, with Digital and Creative Arts leading the way. The 10-12 weeks courses will involve 2 hours a week, filling that often-difficult time early evening when we have evidence that loneliness and isolation can be keenly felt among supported adults.’
Both organisations are excited to continue working together to provide enriching, inclusive learning opportunities that empower adults with learning disabilities to build new skills. Building on the success of the steering group, courses are set to begin shortly after half-term.
