On Monday 13 October, Lisa Hepburn, Fundraising Assistant from St Catherine’s Hospice, visited T Level Health students to discuss the physical and emotional support the charity provides to people living with life-limiting or terminal conditions.
The presentation began with an introductory video of the newly built facility in Pease Pottage, which offers in-house care for residents and a wide range of support for families, including bereavement counselling and wellbeing sessions.

Lisa reflected on how the stigma surrounding end-of-life care is often shaped by images of chaotic hospital environments, leading many to expect the same when entering a Hospice. In reality, she described St Catherine’s as a sanctuary – a place of peace and comfort for those in their care and their families.
Work experience opportunities were also discussed, including volunteering programmes, which allows for roles like shop assistants, fundraising, and administrative work. These roles can be advantageous for students who are curious about working in a hospice environment and looking to demonstrate a passion for care work.
After a Q&A session with the group, Lisa reflected on what she hoped the students gained from the visit:
“I think it’s making more people aware of what hospice care actually is – especially younger people. There’s this perception that it’s somewhere only older people go, but it’s not, and we’re seeing that demographic change dramatically. I hope it inspired the students, and I’d love to encourage them to come over and see us. It can be really inspiring for them when they leave and say, ‘Wow, I was not expecting that.’ It’s calm, it’s comforting – a lot of people say it’s like a big hug.”
Lisa’s visit served as a great reminder to our students that there are many rewarding and meaningful career paths in healthcare beyond the traditional routes, each making a profound difference to people’s lives.
